United Nations Lifts Sanctions on Syrian President Before White House Visit

The UN Security Council gave the green light to a US resolution removing restrictions on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his Washington trip the following week.

He became interim leader subsequent to commanding an insurgent campaign that ousted the previous leader in winter 2024, bringing to a close over a decade of civil war.

Washington's ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "a powerful diplomatic message" that recognised Syria was in "a fresh chapter" following Assad's ouster.

Sharaa was under UN sanctions while commanding the Islamist group the HTS movement, previously associated with al-Qaeda. Washington eliminated the organization from the catalog of global extremist entities in July.

Additional Sanctions Relief

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on penalties against the Syrian interior official Anas Khattab.

The Syrian diplomatic chief expressed satisfaction with the elimination of the penalties, posting on social media: "Syria expresses its appreciation to the United States and allied countries for assisting the Syrian nation and citizens."

Upcoming White House Meeting

President Sharaa's presidential meeting this coming Monday comes after US President Donald Trump said the Syrian leader had made "good progress" working toward stability to the war-torn country.

Following their discussion, Trump said Sharaa had "a real shot for national reconciliation".

The pair met on their first occasion in May, when Trump visited Riyadh on a tour of the region.

Following that encounter, Trump portrayed Sharaa as a "tough guy" having a "formative history".

His Islamist group HTS operated as the terrorist network's partner in Syria until he severed ties back in 2016.

Earlier American Trip

The upcoming meeting does not represent his initial visit to the US this year. This past fall, he emerged as the first Syrian leader to speak before the United Nations gathering in Manhattan for nearly six decades.

During his address, he said Syria was "regaining its deserved status across international circles" and demonstrated unity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
