The collaboration between Nintendo and Illumination shared the initial complete preview for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie this Wednesday. The reveal happened in a Nintendo-focused broadcast that centered on the upcoming animated film.
Following up on the successful 2023 release The Super Mario Bros. Movie, this new installment will transport Mario to the far corners of the cosmos. There, he will encounter a different royal figure and a powerful new opponent in Bowser Jr., the son of the King of the Koopas.
Similar to the Wii console classics that act as its source material, Mario will venture away from the well-known surroundings of the Mushroom Kingdom to travel across the galaxy. During his grand adventure, he will meet again some recognizable characters, such as the Luma, a popular character from the original cinematic release.
But it appears Mario and his sibling Luigi will battle a different foe in the form of Bowser's furious offspring, who reportedly utilizes powers related to metal. Interestingly, the trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is not solely focused on Galaxy-themed scenes; it also features references to additional popular titles like Super Mario Odyssey and Bowser's Fury.
The film will feature once again of the initial voice actors, including Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.
Joining the cast for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie are Brie Larson, who will voice Rosalina, and Benny Safdie, set to play Bowser Jr. This was confirmed by Chris Meledandri, the chief executive of Illumination.
Mario's latest cinematic adventure is planned to debut around the time of the 40-year celebration of the original Super Mario Bros. game. Beyond the film, 2026 promises to be a significant year for Mario and his companions.
Nintendo has a trio of new releases officially announced for 2026, featuring Mario Tennis Fever, a release on Switch 2 of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and a fresh Yoshi side-scroller titled Yoshi and the Mysterious Book.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is officially set to be released on April 3, 2026.
