Israel Threatens National Film Awards Following Palestinian Film Wins Best Picture

Culture Minister Miki Zohar
National Arts Official Miki Zohar threatened to withdraw financial support for the national film ceremony

Israel's culture minister has threatened to eliminate funding for the country's cinema honors after A Palestinian Tale, a narrative about a young Palestinian youth, received its top award.

This production, which follows a boy from the disputed West Bank who wants to journey to an Israeli city to see the sea for the first time, won best film at the Ophir Awards.

“No deeper slap in the face of the people of Israel than the embarrassing and detached annual film ceremony ceremony.”

— Culture Minister

As winner of the best film category at the national ceremony, The Award-Winning Film is now the country's submission to the international film competition at next year's Academy Awards.

Questions Over Financial Warning

It is not yet clear whether the minister is empowered to cut support for the ceremony, according to local media.

Stars of The Winning Picture also received other key awards at the event, including 13-year-old the young actor who took home the leading performer honor—the youngest ever recipient.

Plot Overview

Throughout the story, Gazawi portrays a young the protagonist who is denied entry to the country at an Israel Defense Forces security post during a school excursion to Tel Aviv.

Khaled then sneaks into the nation and attempts to arrive at the beach while his father, an undocumented labourer in the country, tries to find him.

“The production is about the universal right to exist peacefully, a fundamental entitlement we will not give up on.”

Government Reaction

But, in his statement, the Culture Minister labeled the Ophir Awards as “embarrassing and disconnected”.

The minister continued: “Under my watch, the public won’t contribute from their pockets for a ceremony that spits in the faces of our brave troops.”

Industry Response

Answering Zohar's statements, Academy Chair said: “Amid the ongoing war in Gaza exacts a heavy price in casualties and damage, the ability to understand the 'other'... offers small hope.”

Amir added: “In the face of the Israeli government's attacks on Israeli cinema, and the calls from sectors of the global cinema world to avoid us, the choice of The Sea is a strong and resounding answer.”

Wider Situation

It comes after thousands of Hollywood insiders endorsed a vow promising not to collaborate with Israeli film institutions that are “involved in atrocities”.

Israel launched its war in the territory in response to the militant offensive on the country's south on 7 October 2023, in which about over a thousand people were died and 251 others were captured.

No fewer than 65,000 individuals have been fatally injured in Israeli attacks from that point, nearly half of them minors and females, according to the local health ministry.

Recently, a UN commission of investigation said that Israel had carried out genocide against Palestinian people in the region.

The nation's diplomatic office rejected the findings and denounced it “distorted and untrue”.
